Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a pain condition that causes persistent severe and debilitating pain. While the pain is usually triggered by a specific injury, it is much more severe and long-lasting than would be expected. In most cases, the pain affects one limb, however, it can also spread to other parts of the body.
CRPS can cause skin in the affected area to become sensitive, to the point that a slight touch, bump, or even change in temperature can cause intense pain. The affected area may also become swollen and undergo changes in colour or temperature. Pain often improves over time, but some people may experience CRPS for years.
The cause of CRPS is unknown. It is thought to be the result of the body reacting in an abnormal way.
Treatments for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
There is no cure for CRPS, however, a number of treatments are available to help manage symptoms associated with the condition. Treatment can range from physical rehabilitation, such as physiotherapy, medications to manage pain, including anticonvulsants and antidepressants, and psychological support.
